When we knock on a door for the first time, when meeting an applicant, we never know what lies on the other side…each situation is different, and each pulls on the heartstrings – knowing how our efforts will impact a life.

Here are a few reasons why Rebuilding Together San Diego, its sponsor partners and volunteers do what we do.

Although 33-year-old Bob King was born with cerebral palsy, he was determined to live independently. RTSD is not usually in the position to take on mobile homes, however we couldn’t walk away from Bob or the need he had. Watching him struggle to move his wheelchair across the floor, because the old, torn carpet was getting caught in the wheels, was hard to see…but when we saw him attempt to turn into his bedroom smashing his hands up against the wall, causing extensive bruising, as the doorway was too small, there was no question this was our project. Bob also was challenged, because he couldn’t reach the sink or stove in his kitchen to fix meals.

Thanks to our two of our sponsors, the Downtown Rotary Club and Trader Publication, we undertook this project with zeal! We were so grateful to garnered the support from San Diego Sets, which specializes in mobile home remodeling, who donated the labor to widen the doorways and create an accessible kitchen, and to Palomar Flooring who donated new floor covering for the interior and to re-cover the outside wheelchair ramp – all this, along with a fresh coat of interior paint, these much needed improvements have allowed Bob to live on his own.

As a special surprise to Bob, who fancied pretty girls, Hooters donated lunch for the entire work crew the day of the event.

Over the past 30 years, Penny and Bill Hauer have opened their hearts and home, building a family of 19 children, all who are developmentally disabled, and had been rejected by their natural parents.

With most of their time devoted to caring for their adopted children, their focus had not been on home repair needs, nor where they in a position to afford them.

Booz Allen Hamilton partnered with RTSD, renovating this home to make it safe and accessible for all of their family members. Over 100 volunteer employees came out to handle the major landscaping clean-up. The Hauer children chose the color of the rooms that were all re-painted. A wheelchair ramp was installed, and the broken oven was replaced, along with the purchase of a new stovetop. Sleep Train donated new beds for some of the family members.
