Rebuilding Together San Diego was established in 1995, and since then we have rehabilitated over 400 homes and facilities. All of these buildings literally serve thousands of our local residents‘ needs. Likewise, this work we do would not be possible without the help from hundreds of volunteers, civic-minded companies, building tradesmen, and community groups that support our work with sponsorships, financial contributions, and in-kind donations of resources, materials, and time.
Rebuilding Together started over 30 years ago, as Christmas in April, with an act of grassroots in Midland, Texas. A small group of good people realized the growing need in their community after seeing that their neighbors’ homes had fallen into disrepair and the homeowners could not afford to fix them. So the founding affiliates volunteered their time and skill to rehabilitate the homes of their neighbors.
This simple act of neighbors helping neighbors inspired others, growing slowly at first, then across the country. Our mission spread beyond the idea of providing service once a year in April, to bringing together partners from all walks of life to help our neighbors all year-round. We became Rebuilding Together and opened the National Headquarters in 1988.
Today, the Rebuilding Together Affiliate Network of 200 chapters covers cities throughout the United States. With the collective help of 3.4 million volunteers, we have completed work on more than 100,000 homes across the nation. And since its founding, Rebuilding Together continues its mission of seeking to provide a safe and healthy home for every person.
